Help! I Need A Laptop For My Phone Sex Business

Every now & then, when I receive a cluster of similar questions (from folks in similar circumstances), I’ll do a blog post to help what I call The Collective.

Today, The Collective has been asking about investing in a laptop for their phone sex work.

I created a composite sketch, if you will, of these sex worker needs & sent three of my favorite tech minions the task of finding the best options given the following specs:

* Source: the laptop must be available on Amazon (in USA)

* Budget: ideally below $200; but no more than $250

* Laptop must be able to

  • create documents**
  • have decent amount of storage
  • must be suitable for viewing Netflix/Humu or somesuch

I also added in that it would be nice for this computer to grow with any potential business plans, i.e. possibly having the ability to work with audio & video files.

** Regarding document creation… While it is possible for folks to use Google Drive – we all know (or at least should by now!) that Google is purging adult works. So I would not recommend relying on it. If you do opt to use Google Drive, save & download to your own device asap. That way, if it is deleted, you have a copy. However, there are other options.

One of my tech minions recommends using Office:

For office work, like documents, just do Office 365 — it’s like $7 a month, or $70 a year — buying the standalone software costs $150-$200. Most new Windows PCs make it easy to sign up for Office365.

Another minion has a free option:

As far as creating documents, LibreOffice is free and very capable and runs on windows, saves to local drive. The newest is always buggy, as they sort of indicate – but they always support the one older than newest which has most of the bugs it started with fixed.

Now, here are the laptop findings of the trio of tech minions:

First, two of my minions agreed that going the refurbished route is typically the most economical option. Amazon offers Amazon Renewed laptops, which are Refurbished, Pre-Owned, and Open-Box Products which have been inspected and tested by qualified suppliers to work and look like new — and come with a minimum 90-day supplier-backed warranty.

One of my tech minions cautions regarding refurbished, saying, “Make sure that the laptop comes with Windows 10 — sometimes refurbished are ‘blank’ systems and you need to provide your own operating system (Win10 costs about $100).”

Among these refurbished or “renewed” options, the following specific laptops were suggested by name. Listed from least expensive to most expensive (based on the time of publication of this post).

Dell Latitude E6430; 8GB DDR3 – 320gb SATA Hard Drive; i5 Dual-Core Processor; comes with Windows 10 Professional; currently $174.99 & free shipping; financing options via Amazon Store Card.

Dell Latitude E6420; 4GB RAM / 320GB Hard Drive; i5 Dual Core Processor; comes with Windows 10; currently $189; available via Amazon Prime.

HP Elitebook 8470p Laptop; 160 GB SSD 8 GB; i5 Dual-Core Processor; comes with Windows 10 Professional; currently $214; available via Amazon Prime & with financing options via Amazon Store Card.

Lenovo 15.6 inch High-Performance Home and Business Laptop; 500 GB Storage (4GB RAM); AMD A6 Dual-core Processor; comes with Windows 10 Home; currently $247.98; available via Amazon Prime & with financing options via Amazon Store Card.

Dell Latitude E6440; 256GM Storage (8GB RAM); i5 Processsor; comes with Windows 10; currently $247.99; available via Amazon Prime & with financing options via Amazon Store Card.

2019 Newest Lenovo IdeaPad; 128 GB Storage (4GB RAM); AMD A9-9425 Dual Core Processor; comes with Windows 10; currently $252.20; available via Amazon Prime & with financing options via Amazon Store Card.

DELL I3565-A453BLK-PUS – the only non-refurbished in the bunch (also the most expensive); 500 GB 4 GB; 7th Gen. AMD Dual-Core A6-9220 Processor; comes with Windows 10 Home; currently $269; available via Amazon Prime & with financing options via Amazon Store Card.

Other noted bits: 500GB is a lot of space, 1TB even more-so; most laptops come with that at a minimum. Ideally, you want an i5 CPU and as much RAM as possible. (Note: The recommended tech either has Intel i5 or AMD A6; here’s a starting point on comparisons.) Dual Core processors, and larger memory, are recommended for video work.
